My spiritual practice is integral to my life and to my creative practice
I’m primarily a Buddhist but over the 30 years that I’ve been practising, I have integrated Pagan and Shamanic magic into the way that I work.
The Buddhist Threefold Way is a guide for living a good life and I try to live my own life according to these three aspects:
Meditation
Deepening our connection with our inner world, our emotions and imagination is integral to creative practice, but it is also a key part of Buddhist spiritual practice. Activities such as drawing, sewing and dancing can put us into a “flow” state which is an altered state of consciousness that can also be accessed and further deepened through spiritual practices, such as meditation.
You may be familiar with the concept of Mindfulness, which has been taken from Buddhist teachings and widely adopted by Western psychologists, but did you know that one of the most fundamental Buddhist practices is meditations on kindness? In traditional Buddhism, mindfulness is always practiced alongside kindness and within the context of a supportive Buddhist community.
Kindness practices help us stay attuned with our deepest selves and connected with those around us.

Wisdom
You may be wondering how wisdom can be something that is practised, rather than magically acquired, but in the Buddhist tradition, wisdom is attained through spiritual practices such as meditation and the study of spiritual teachings. These develop our capacity for original & critical thinking as well as insight into the nature of reality. Part of my practice is walking and thinking, turning over the issues of the day in my mind and sharing them with others through my writings and courses. I think a lot about creativity and how it is a vital part of not only my work, health & wellbeing, but also of my spiritual practice.
In my substack “Under Raven’s Wing” you’ll find my thoughts on spiritual practice – both Buddhist & Pagan, and a course I’m developing on creative recovery for my subscribers.
